About
I design websites. Designing a successful website includes not only the graphical interface, but also how the user moves through the site, and how information is presented in text and graphics. I also am a front-end developer, taking my own design or another’s, and turning it into code, including templates that can be used by programmers.
My company is based in the small West Texas town of Marfa (population 2121). While some of my clients and team members are also here, it’s the exception and not the rule. In the distributed network that is web work, most of my current clients and the professionals with whom I collaborate are spread throughout the US.
Background
In 1996 I began designing websites for a small base of loyal, local clients. After a couple of years, I took a job with Xynergy, an interactive media agency in Santa Fe, which was a lot like being thrown into the pool to see if I’d sink or swim. I found out I could swim. I went on to become their senior project manager and led my team in our transition to web standards and CSS from table-hack buildouts. I was responsible for some of Xynergy’s largest clients, including the New Mexico Tourism Department and Shirley MacLaine - in the process learning a lot about the State of New Mexico and how to balance your pet’s chakras.
In 2005, I left Xynergy to start David Hirschi Interactive and a year later took my business with me to Marfa. I figured if I had my own business again and a laptop, I could work anywhere for anybody. Turns out I was right.
My clients include visual artists, arts organizations, nonprofits, and small businesses. I also collaborate with other media agencies and independent web professionals on a wide variety of larger projects.
